Tulum Time

We typically try to take a kid-free trip each Spring and this year that meant 5 days in Tulum.  Sand, surf, sun, some Mayan ruins and lots and lots of good food.  We stayed at the Papaya Playa Project which was the perfect mix of rustic luxury, hip clientele, and home to a kick-ass Saturday night beach party.  I had been wanting to go to Tulum for a couple of years.  Known for it’s burgeoning restaurant scene, yoga and wellness retreats, not to mention the sun and beautiful water it seemed like the perfect place to chill out and get away from it all for a few days.

We had front row dining seats on a daily basis (order the fish tacos) and an oceanfront casita with beautiful views of the beach.

I spent my days dressed as such:

We kicked off our vacation eating at Posada Margherita which is an adorable Italian spot making homemade pastas and using the most fresh ingredients imaginable.  I probably could have eaten there every night we were in Tulum.

I had heard of Hartwood from a number of friends and attempted, to no avail, to make a reservation three weeks in advance.  There are no phones, only email, which I came to find out they only sparingly respond to.  Forget about a hotel concierge.  The only way in is to know someone or plan months and months in advance!  It looked awesome though!

So what to do when Hartwood won’t take walk-ins?  Eat at arguably the two other restaurants in town that rival, if not surpass the well known…Casa Banana and Cenzontle.  Margaritas, gin drinks, great wine.  Oh and lots of amazing food.  We sampled a lot of plates at Cenzontle including a grilled avocado dish.  It sounded strange but it couldn’t have been more amazing.

The best lunch in town?  Absolutely Charly’s Vegan Tacos.  A taco truck parked in the middle of the palm trees, off the side of the road and some of the best tacos in the world.

The shopping, and outdoor recreation scenes, in Tulum are pretty great.  The boutiques trend toward high-end but are fun to wander through on a lazy afternoon.  While we are divers (mostly in the years preceding kiddos) we were all too happy to spend our time at the beach reading and relaxing but the Cenotes are on the agenda for our next trip to Tulum!

The evenings at Papaya Playa, and pretty much throughout all of Tulum, were the most magical.  These basket pendants light up the entire beachfront of Tulum.  Very Serena & Lilly-esque but locally made.

Until next time, Tulum…perhaps we will bring the kids.  Or not.

A Hotel Gem in Cincinnati

I travel a fair amount for my job and typically stay true to my Starwood Loyalty Program (hello, Platinum) but there are times when there are no Starwood hotels available so I have to branch out.  And at times there is a gem to be found.  My last trip to Cincinnati was no exception.  I stumbled upon the 21C Museum hotel right in the heart of the business district.  It’s an art museum/boutique hotel combination that can be found in a couple of smaller cities throughout the US.  Cool restaurant and bar, lots of awesome art, and these giant penguins that they move around each night to ‘surprise’ their guests.  No one ever quite knows where those penguins are going to show up.

Lucky me, I was upgraded to a suite and upon walking in found these awesome pillows on the couch.IMG_0600

Funky lighting especially for a hotel room…

Modern bathroom features blending just the right amount of marble and stone as well as matte black fixtures.

The bedroom wasn’t quite as cool as the bathroom and living room but their beds are so comfortable.  I’ll definitely be returning!

Sayulita with Kids

We love to travel.  We always have and always will.  And when we found out we were having our first child we committed to instilling a love of travel in our future children.

Christmas on the beach in Sayulita.

They’re now nearly 4 and 2 and I’m thrilled to say that we have traveled near and far with both of them.  It’s not easy, of course, but it’s so worth it.

This past Christmas we decided to take two weeks off and headed to Sayulita, Mexico for some sun and surf.  Everyone always asks ‘how do you do it?’ when it comes to traveling, especially abroad, with our kids.  The easiest answer is that we just DO.  We rented a great house, via Sayulita Life, in the North Beach area of the town which is known to be quieter and better for families with young kids.

Upon arrival we had arranged to be picked up in Puerto Vallarta and taken directly to our house in Sayulita which is only about 45 minutes north of the airport.  Our main mode of transportation for the two weeks was a double BOB stroller rented in town from Octavia at Bebe.  A critical need for sure!  We loaded that thing up daily for trips to the beach, to get groceries in town, and to explore all around.IMG_2312

While we had a kitchen at the rental house we tend to eat out, in general, so we spent most nights walking into town to get dinner and dessert.  The day was not complete without a stop at Wakika for our daily ice cream and popsicle fix.

We spent our days on the beach with a few naps and walks in between.  It’s amazing how adaptable kids are and ours quickly got into the daily breakfast, beach, hang at the house, and go out to dinner routine.

We were lucky enough to have my parents join us for our second week so we had some flexibility to do some things our little guy can’t do yet such as taking Parker for her first lengthy horseback riding excursion.  It lasted two hours and wound up through the mountains.  We couldn’t believe how much she loved it.

Just a few days ago Parker asked if we could go back to Mexico this summer.  If only!  More on Sayulita to come.  I have a ton of great restaurants, and some shops, to share.

Celebrating all the moms

We are so fortunate to live near our families and because of that my Mom is able to watch our kids at least once per week.  So this Mother’s Day I was able to say ‘thanks’ by taking her on a 24 hour excursion to the lovely Omni Bedford Springs.  IMG_0497Built in the late 1800s, and host to multiple presidents, Bedford Springs was known as a healing getaway.  And it still is! From the food to the world-class spa it is the perfect respite.  And, lucky for us, only an hour and a half from Pittsburgh.

The first time there, a couple of years ago, I couldn’t believe the incredible tales of the renovation that had taken place and the attention to detail given to the decor.  I had heard from a friend that there was a Bedford Springs design guide so of course I asked the Concierge if I might review it.  The entire renovation was done by a firm out of Richmond called 3north and not only did they do their homework – and then some – but they made a historical renovation look modern & fresh.  Think wallpaper on the ceilings, Benjamin Moore colors, marble mosaic tile, and Waterworks fixtures in each and every bathroom of the massive resort.

My mom and I took advantage of our 24 hours away by enjoying the spa, having dinner in the Crystal room on property and taking time to catch up with one another.

It’s hard not to leave Bedford Springs without being relaxed, but I was excited to get home in time for brunch with my little ones.  While they were not along for this particular trip, the hotel has a LOT for kids to do from the hiking to fire pit, outdoor and indoor spring-fed pools, horseshoes, and lots of family-oriented activities.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Moms in my life – and a big thanks to my wonderful kids for making ME a mom.

Rancho Bernardo Inn

My husband and I were recently in San Diego for his cousin’s wedding and were lucky enough to stay the weekend at Rancho Bernardo Inn.  A hidden gem in the hills of San Diego.  This was our second stay at the hotel and it was really nice to be back!  We spent our short stay enjoying the spa, a workout, and lunch by the pool.

Approaching the spa, and all over the resort, are beautiful lanterns hung in the trees.  Everything is so well done from a design perspective.

Here I am enjoying one of the many fireplaces located throughout the resort…a sister-in-law had come up behind me and said that I actually looked really zen and relaxed.  I suppose being on vacation without my kids will do that!

All roads lead back to Santa Barbara

My very first post!  This site has been a long time coming and since its name has its origins in Santa Barbara (see the ‘About’ page) I thought it fitting to officially kick it off while here for a short visit.  I can hardly believe that it’s been 13 years since I lived in this beautiful spot so aptly termed the American Riviera.  It’s stunning and best of all the home of one of my dearest friends, Darian, who encouraged me to dive right in and kick-off this journey once and for all.  So here I am with a little post about my most recent 36 hours in Santa Barbara.IMG_0125

While much has stayed the same there are a lot of changes very fitting to the town I once called home.  Lots of new restaurants, wineries, and little shops abound especially in the Funk district which was once a bunch of old warehouses and cool artist havens.  An entire block is comprised of awesome food and drinks:  Lucky Penny, The Lark, Figueroa Mountain Brewery, and Les Marchands.  All new to me – and all fantastic.  Darian happens to have an adorable six-year-old so pizza and brews were our food of choice one evening.  Lucky for us that Lucky Penny delivers pizzas to go to Figueroa Brewing!

The coolest little shops can be found in and around this area of town too particularly The Blue Door  and the Guitar Bar.

It’s not a trip to Santa B without an excursion to Wilcox, now officially the Douglas Family Preserve.  It’s where I used to walk my dog, Zoey, and generally feel most at peace.  It’s a stunning ocean side preserve set on top of huge cliffs with miles and miles of shoreline, mountain, and island views.IMG_0120

Best of all my time was spent enjoying good friends, good wine, and the smells of Santa Barbara.  Yes, the smells.  If someone could bottle up the town and sell it they would make a killing.  Eucalyptus, star jasmine, Bougainvillea, sea salt, and mountain air.  That is what makes it feel most like home.  And hopefully that is one thing that will never change.
